Padres Claim Alex Castellanos

The Padres made a roster move today, claiming outfielder Alex Castellanos from the Texas Rangers. The Padres announced the acquisition, via their Twitter page. In order to make room on the 40-man roster, the Padres placed Cory Luebke on the 60-day DL.

Castellanos has had a busy offseason, as the Padres are his fourth organization since last season. Castellanos was originally drafted the 10th round by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2008. He spent most of last year with AAA Albuquerque, in the Dodgers organization.

Castellanos, who is 27, hasn't had much success at the big league level, but he did put up a solid triple-slash line of .257/.347/.468, with 19 homers. He also stole 19 bases as well.

Kevin Says: I like this move from the Padres perspective. Cameron Maybin will start the year on the DL, so the Padres may have room on the roster. Castellanos has shown a mix of power and speed at the AAA level, and he could get some at-bats for the Padres.

The Padres get to look at Castellanos for a few weeks and see if he can stick on the big league roster. If not, they can attempt to pass him through waivers and stash him in AAA. Low-risk move for the Padres.
